Evan Granowitz: In Memory of the Honorable Marcus Kaufman

Evan Granowitz recalls Honorable Marcus Kaufman’s watchwords in life, “Justice, and only justice, shall you pursue.”

Born on 1929, Kaufman was raised in Norfolk, Virginia until his family moved to Los Angeles, California. Growing up in the Hollywood area, he developed his interest in law during his high school years often watching federal court proceedings at the L.A. Civic Center. After serving as an Army lieutenant during the Korean War, he returned to the United States and attended the USC Law School. Seventeen years of his service included being Associate Justice of the California Court of Appeal, Fourth Appellate District, and Second Division. On March 1987, Kaufman was honored as the 103rd justice of the Supreme Court of California.

Evan Granowitz shares that while many recall Kaufmann as the scholar, independent thinker and mentor he was for the legal community, Kaufman would be remembered by him and family members as their “Zaidi,” who never failed to find time to spend with family members. Granowitz recalls Kaufmann’s wisdom and passion for excellence, pursuit of perfection in every aspect of life, and absolute responsibility to help those who are less fortunate.

On the day of his death, Kaufmann’s last words of wisdom to his family were not about personal achievement and recognition but in serving a nobler purpose in life and for mankind. As Evan Granowitz quotes, “Ideas, values and ideals do not perish with the mind that conceived them or the life that exemplified them. They live on and play a part in the lives of those to whom they have been transmitted. And so people live on after death in the ideas, values, and ideals they transmitted during their lives, which often continue to grow and spread even after death.”
